Carol’s life changed in an instant when she suffered a massive stroke at the age of 62, leaving
her paralyzed on one side unable to walk or use her left hand and arm. To make matters worse,
the love of her life, her third husband of twenty-plus years, abandoned her within a few months.
Carol was alone, lost, and devastated. But she immediately became determined to have a
happy life in spite of all her losses. She knew that it would be a long and difficult journey, but she
was determined to do whatever was necessary and regain her independence. Bewildered and
lost just a week after her stroke, Carol pledged to write a book to inform others about the
devastation of a stroke calling it “A Stroke of Luck.” Before she finished “A Stroke of Luck,
however, she wrote the inspirational book, “Brain Attack: Surviving A Stroke. ”to share how she
maintains her positive attitude through the good, bad, and the ugly of stroke recovery.
As Carol wrote “A Stroke of Luck,” it became clear that she was writing her memoirs and she
realized that there were a number of events in her life (strokes of luck) that taught her the strong
resilience she would need and that prepared her to thrive, not just survive her stroke.
