wrote my first book, Brain Attack: Surviving a Stroke, when I realized something surprising — I was happier than many people around me who had never had a stroke. If I could find joy and fulfillment after such a life-changing event, I knew others could, too.
In Brain Attack, I share the lessons I’ve learned throughout my life — the same ones I rely on every day to stay positive, grateful, and strong. These lessons can uplift anyone, but my heart is especially dedicated to helping those whose lives have been touched by stroke.
Because happiness isn’t about what happens to us — it’s about how we rise, rebuild, and choose to live with hope.
Throughout Carol E Yorke’s recovery from a significant stroke, her personality was
such that she naturally jokes about her condition, which helps her cope and puts others
at ease with her self-deprecating humor. Now, she shares some of her favorite stroke
jokes, so you can laugh along with her, but never at her.
Carol E. Yorke was a successful business professional for over 25 years until 2009 when a significant stroke struck her down and left her unable to walk or think clearly. Over the years since her stroke, Ms Yorke came to realize the healing powers of her positive, can-do attitude and began writing to share her insights with others surviving strokes and other life-changing events. Her first book, “Brain Attack: Surviving a Stroke,” was published in 2015.
Carol and her husband Gary were living the good life on an acre and a half of land they
had recently bought and moved into 3 miles outside the small town of Camden,
Arkansas, when their life changed in an instant. Carol had suffered a massive stroke at
the vibrant age of 62, leaving her paralyzed on one side unable to walk or use her left
hand and arm. Within months the love of her life, her third husband of twenty-plus
years, became overwhelmed and abandoned her, leaving her alone, lost, and
devastated. But, immediately, she became determined to have a happy life in spite of
all these devastating losses.
Carol E. Yorke’s story and insights have touched the lives of survivors, caregivers, and medical professionals alike. Here’s what people are saying
“Carol’s book is an inspiration and a model of how one can not only endure but truly thrive after a stroke. Her message is clear, concise, and invaluable to stroke survivors, their families, and friends. Beyond her loving and motivational words, she provides practical resources to ease the road to recovery. I will have this book in my office for patients and families—it speaks to the heart and soul in ways traditional medicine often overlooks.”
